1st Word Printer Driver for HP Laser Jet II by John Krohn The HPLSRJET.HEX file that accompanies this file will drive the HP LaserJet II laser printer from the 1st Word word processor. The driver allows the user to implement bold, underlining, sub- and super-scripts and virtually all of the Atari character set with the exception of the Hebrew characters. When used with a font cartridge supporting the extra fonts required, light and italics text are available. I received the basic driver file from Gregg Anderson and have modified it to enable sub- and super- scripts and some additional characters. I also eliminated the references to NLQ printing since the LaserJet is a letter quality printer. Again, due to the default character sets in the LaserJet II, the legal symbols (copyright, trademark, etc.) are unavailable unless the HP Legal font is installed as a cartridge. There may be other character sets which also contain these symbols that I am not aware of at this time. I was also unable to coax a complete listing of the Latin character set from the printer, but have been promised one by a HP representative. If this character set proves to hold some missing or useful characters, an update to the driver will be posted. I did experience one problem in using the LaserJet. In certain cases the printer would eject an extra blank page following each page of text. I was unable to track down the cause of this error. I do not believe that it is caused by anything in the driver, but somewhat suspect problems with the Control Panel accessory. I experienced the best luck in avoiding this problem when the INSTALL PRINTER accessory was set for 960 pixels per line. Any improvements or suggestions for future updates/revisions to this driver are welcome. I am not able to use the LaserJet often as it is located at work and my computer stays at home. Therefore, improved revisions may be somewhat slow in coming. I wish everyone trying to use the LaserJet with the ST good luck and happy computing. John Krohn (J.KROHN)
